Starter Motor Removal

Best Answer Davris1373 , 28 March 2025 - 07:15 PM

Thank you everyone for your help, I put my old battery in the car today and it started up first time. The new battery is still under warranty so I'll be returning it for a replacement. I've got a service booked soon so I'll ask them to check the earthing too just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again 😀 Go to the full post

Yes, (3)'s result means you have a bad ground somewhere between battery and engine. To find the cause, try test (3) but between battery neg post and chassis, and then try again between chassis and engine. Most likely it is the battery-neg-to-chassis strap in the boot that's failed - and that's why all your electrics died when you tried to crank. (Also, if the engine/chassis strap fails, the engine still usually manages to get at least some cranking power via the choke cable... which sometimes melts.)

Is the engine earth strap fitted?

Yes there is an earthing strap on both the upper and lower engine steadies which both show 0 ohm from end to end.

I'll check the voltage from the battery to the chassis on Friday before and after cranking and let yous know

Do it while cranking. Before and after won't tell you much.

It's very likely that the fault is where the battery earth strap is bolted to the body. A clean-up of the metal and a new bolt with some copperslip to prevent further corrosion will most probably sort the problem.

Don't forget to put the starter bolts back in :-)
