Hi there.

I recently changed the gasket on the diff pot housing. The engine has been sitting for about 15 years and all the oil had leaked out as when I'd removed the exhaust bracket, I didn't replace the bolts.

I replaced the gasket and put some RTV on there also, I half filled the engine with oil and all seemed good. I have now installed the engine back into the car and over the weekend went through the pain of priming the oil pump, and now I have a leak! I've not had the car up yet to fully investigate, but appears to be in the same area again.

Question: Has this happened because when I removed and cleaned up the area, I didn't use break cleaner to ensure all the oil was off the surfaces before installing the new gasket?

Was just after some advice before I tackle this again, this time under the car.

Cheers

Not Sure yet, lunchtime plan is to get the car jacked up to have a look, but I did replace both seals (and gear linkage seal).

UPDATE:

Looks like the oil is seeping out from the bolt hole, any thoughts? would ramming some RTF on the bolt work?

Unlikely that will sort it, I've tried similar as a temporary fix but leaked again. There are 2 different length bolts on that side did you put the 2 longer one on the exhaust bracket holes? It's a bit fiddly doing it in the car but not impossible, hardest bit is scraping off the old gasket and making sure everything is spotless before refitting.

Cool, thanks for the feedback, I’ll get the oil dropped ready for doing it again.
I’ll check what length bolts I put in, the three for the bracket were lost when I took it all apart, maybe I’ll order some correct ones.

Cheers

Urgh, so, ‘new’ diff pot installed, but, one of the threads on the housing seems to have stripped!
How have people actioned this problem? Helicoils has been suggested, people had any luck doing this? What thread are they? I believe they maybe a whitworth, this correct? Or have people just tapped a metric in?

I've helicoiled them OK, just don't drill right through.

Thread is 5/16" UNC. You would get away with Whitworth.
