You may see from other threads that I have been chasing problems with getting my 89 998 Mini up and running.

Checking and adjusting the engine settings requires knowing what RPMs the engine is doing.

I have a Gunson Automotive Multimeter UT105 with and RPM function.

I connect it as instructed, red to coil neg terminal, black to earth.

Set the dial to RPM 4 cyl

The instructions and the dial both say take the read out and multiply by 10 to get actual rpm

My problem is I do not believe the value that it shows.

3250 for an engine that feels more like well below 2000.

Has anyone got a similar experience or is it me that needs recalibrating

If you are running points in the distributor, it could be that they are not breaking 'clean' but giving a good arc. That can be from the condensor.

I dont think so.  There is nothing in the manual and there is only the one dial.  the only options on the RPM selection is the number of cylinders

Sorry I am not sure what that means.

Yes it has points.

Does that mean they could need cleaning or gap setting?

Or does the condensor need renewing?

See if they are clean and then set the dwell.

I seem to be running a parallel thread with commom issues

As suggested I set about cleaning the points and checking the points gap

Now the car will not start at all and there is no spark

I nust have dislodged something

At a guess here, you may not have gaped the points correctly and they may not be closing.

If you disconnect the distributor from the coil and go through all the separate parts with a multimeter on ohms, you'll soon find the issue. Assume nothing and test everything.

The points may not be correct but when i checked with a bulb the light was going on and off

That'll be enough to get it running.

Have you tried with the distributor connected to the coil, opening the points (from closed) with an insulated tool ?  You should see a spark at the points.

To be fair I have never had much luck with digital meters and conventional ignition systems including a snap on £450 automotive meter which was not much more than useless for decent rpm reading. In use old school timing light rpm reading or an analogue gauge. These analogue gauges are much better for this task.

There is a choice on that meter for 2 or 4 stroke, are you on the correct one?
