good question - lol

assume from the switched ignition feed that would have supplied the orginal instrument panel like temp gauge ?

It’s worth tracing it back and checking it’s getting the right voltage. The older style temp & fuel gauges used a voltage stabiliser that was around 10v

Unlikely this will be your problem but worth checking

no voltage stabiliser needed on this type.... just plucking up the courage to rummage at the power and earth leads- guess I could start by making sure all connections to fuse box are goood- once i've identified the right wire for power
