My son fitted one of the inertia seatbelts from Mini Spares today, but the belt seems too long. He replaced the Kangol reel with the new one, and used the exiting mounts to attach the belt. The reel is fully wound, there's no space available for any more belt.

The instructions weren't much use - have we missed something obvious?

What were they like when you unpacked them?

If you remove one of the belts from the mounting does the reel pull the excess belt webbing in?

 Hi Mike,

There was the excess of the belt folded on itself, secured with an elastic band, and the reel was fully wound. I still have the other seatbelt which is still in the boxed condition.

The excess webbing is there straight out of the box, which makes sense as it doesn't need to be fully wound, it's just that there's so much excess, I'm wondering if it is fitted differently.

Looking at the Minispares website the belts are 'Produced in the UK for Minispares by Safety Belt Solutions Ltd.'

I would give them (SBS) a call direct first (contact details in link below) as perhaps they have supplied Minispares too long belt webbing intended for another type of car?

ie. Some 2-seater sports cars need longer inertia belts as the reels are mounted further back on the rear arches/bulkhead behind the front seats

Then contact Minispares depending on what you find out from the manufacturer.

It may also be that Minispares need to supply a slightly shorter inertia belt to suit the later 'factory fit' position of inertia reels in the rear pocket mounting, rather than down at floor level as was often seen before the later Mk4 Minis had the reels concealed in the rear pockets. (Plus rear pocket ashtrays deleted)

That's the one mab. I've been in touch with Mini Spares, I'll see what they say first. Definitely doesn't fit in its current configuration.

I've been in touch with Mini Spares who were great. They agree the belt has been fitted correctly, so I'll return them and look elsewhere for inertia seat belts.

Might be worth contacting SBS below direct and see if they can supply a suitable inertia belt length, they may even have the correct one in stock for the later Mk4 Mini with rear pocket fitment for the reel.

Check to see if there is a part on the retractor that is supposed to be removed on installation (read the instructions).

You win the prize. There was a small piece of foam that I couldn't see after my son had fitted it, I took the reel off and spotted it. The seat belt works perfectly now.
