Dont Understand The Timing Setting In Haynes Manuel

Best Answer alpder , 10 March 2025 - 02:23 PM

It means "8 degrees is the ideal setting, but anywhere between 6 and 8 is acceptable."

Suck-eggs advice: a dob of something white on the pointer and rubbed into the 8-degree mark make the job much easier.

I just got my Mini running after a rebuild and a long time doing nothing.

I want to set the timing more precisely now with my Timing Gun

My Mini is a 998 standard year 1989

the Ignition Timing in the Haynes Manual page 5B 2  says

Mini saloon and variants, 998 cc 1982-on

 1989-on low compression                           8deg  +0deg  -2deg BTDC at 1500rpm

What does that mean?

All other sections give just 1 value which is what I was looking for

It also says that it should be done at 1500RPM  with the vacuum advance hose disconnected.

And the hose plugged to prevent the air upsetting the idle ..
