1969 Mk2 +Earth .. Dynamo Change

Best Answer alpder , 06 March 2025 - 08:41 PM

There are probably +ve earth dynamator style alternators available?

Do choose a quality make: My 'Tudor' brand Dynamator failed badly because of a terrible piece of design inside it: https://www.theminif...ears/?p=3771972

But the badly designed part which caused the fault could be removed, so long as you don't need the PTO on the back of it. The rest of the alternator looked reasonably well made.

Evening all, I was wondering people’s views on a change from the standard dynamo to a Dynamator? My Mk2 1969 1000 is on a dynamo and I’d like to change it to an alternator but as everything on the car is positive Earth it’s not a simple change. The Dynamator seems to be perfect for the change but does anyone have any experiences of these units? Thanks in advance!

Switching a dynamo to negative earth is pretty straightforward and a popular modification to do. Have you got any non-factory electrical components that are specifically positive earth?

Evening, yes the ignition is electronic and positive Earth, the rev counter too, the other smiths gauges can, I assume, be rectified by changing the voltage regulator to a negative one.

I asked the same question a while ago. This is the advice I received.

My '64 will be keeping its dynamo. Like the idea of an electronic regulator hidden inside the control box, though.
