Hi, I’m doing a custom job and need to order some stainless bumpers for said job. I need to cut some slots in the bumper so it needs to be stainless to avoid rusting. Now, I’ve bought some from wood and Pickett but a magnet sticks to them. I’ve spoken to them and they’re telling me that some stainless is magnetic. Whilst that may be true there is surely some trace of mild steel in there and that’s what the magnet is sticking to? Do I try and source some truly stainless bumpers or am I fine to cut these ones and not have to worry about rust problems?
Any help appreciated

Web search.... gives...

The types of stainless steel that are magnetic are ferritic, martensitic, and duplex stainless steels; while austenitic stainless steels are typically non-magnetic.

So just because it has some magnetic properties does not make it rusty.
Explanation:
  • Ferritic stainless steel:
This type is considered the most magnetic due to its high ferrite content, with common grades like 409 and 430 being magnetic.

  • Martensitic stainless steel:
Also magnetic, with grades like 410 and 420 exhibiting magnetic properties.

  • Duplex stainless steel:
A combination of austenitic and ferritic phases, making it partially magnetic.

  • Austenitic stainless steel:
This type is generally non-magnetic due to its high nickel content, with common grades like 304 and 316.

They`ll be fine, chop away.

The bumpers need to be a less pure grade to be able be pressed into shape.
