hey all,
I'm planning out a budget stereo system for my new-to-me JDM Mini.
An under seat subwoofer with built-in amp seems to be a good way to go. Has anyone done this? have a recommended model that isn't too tall?

I use a Pioneer TS-WX130DA under the driver seat, it's fit perfectly between the seat rails of the much bulkier construction of the factory build cabriolet , so it should also fit well under a standard Mini seat, but please measure for Yourself [280 mm (W) x 200 mm (H) x 70 mm (D)]
But the TS-WX130DA is now nla and replaced with the TS-WX140DA of the same dimensions.
Combined with Pioneer TS-G1330F (modified) in the front and TS-G1730F in the rear and an nla modern Blaupunkt head unit in my opinion a set up to have fun and enjoy music in a Classic Mini on a good enough level for not so much money.

thanks for all the info!
I saw a recent youtube video of a classic mini audio build and he used a retro-looking Blaupunkt, but when i go to their website I see very minimal amounts of gear for sale and none of it looks like what he used just 2 years ago.
I'm also looking at Retrosound. Not sure if they are available outside the USA. Their head units are a tad on the expensive side but the subwoofer appears to be a good price: https://www.crutchfi...100.html?tp=114

Your welcome,
yes Blaupunkt has shrunken they line-up dramatically over the last years. But still there should be the Bremen SQR 46 DAB, the Frankfurt RCM 82 DAB and the Hamburg SQM 23 DAB.
But a quick search shows me, in the US, they not easy to come on by and quite a bit more expensive, like about twice the price compared to here.
On the other hand, Retrosound is not so common here and much more expensive... and I personally don't like the look. But I never heard them, so sadly I can't give You an comparison...

Yes, You pay a lot for the name and the look.
The sound and quality should be good but nothing special. My ten year old Blaupunkt Hamburg 420 BT is starting to show signs of wear and age. But I'm still satisfied with it.

Hi,
I understood that Blaupunkt do not make anything anymore all they do is sell their name to firms in China and elsewhere to use.
It filed for bankruptcy in late 2015 with liquidation proceedings completed in early 2016. The brand, now managed by GIP Development SARL of Luxembourg, is licensed for use by various product groups worldwide.
But I believe the overall owner of the name has no changed.

I just bought a TS-WX140DA I am thinking of installing it under the back seat bolted from the top so it faces downwards as I have the rare Mini Cooper leather seats that I don't want to wreck.. I am going to look at it today and see if it will fit. I will let you know how it goes.

I appreciate everyone's responses, very helpful!
When I asked about subwoofers, i hadn't yet worked out what i was doing with the head unit/receiver/amp or primary speakers.
At this point, I think I'm leaning towards using a small 4-channel amp along with a bluetooth receiver/controller device. These are the possible options as of now:
amp: https://nvx.com/coll...arine-certified
bluetooth device: https://nvx.com/coll...cles-atvs-boats
for speakers, there appear to be existing 6x9's that I'll replace with these: https://www.crutchfi...-46CSC6934.html
and I might add some pods in the front that will take 1" tweeters: https://www.etsy.com...printed-tweeter
and 1" speakers: https://www.crutchfi...0ct.html?tp=107
I chatted with another Mini owner who has only the 6x9's in the back and he was happy with the sound and volume. so I may start with the above setup and add the subwoofer later if I feel like it needs something extra.
thoughts? will the tiny 1" tweeters be a waste of time? I really like how those pods don't block visibility and fit neatly, that being the reason for such a small speaker choice.

The owner previous to the owner I bought my Mini from, had installed a Pioneer DEHS4220BT stereo connected to a JBL Stage A6004 60W amp with 2 6" round JBL 3 way speakers in the parcel shelf as rears and there were 2 14" X14' X4" wide boxes with speakers in for the fronts sitting on the floor loose behind the front seat. The previous owner didn't use them and I didn't want them as they took up far too much room. The sound system worked just fine but I wanted more bass.
I installed the Pioneer TSWX140DA subwoofer under the front right seat there is just enough room for it (passenger side my Mini is LHD), it wouldn't fit to the underside of the back seat as there is less room than i thought. I Moved the JBL speaker wires form the rears to the fronts on the Amp connections and used what was the right front speaker wires as the subwoofer input wires and connected them as per the amp wiring diagram to the rear connections. I connected the subwoofer positive wire to the positive on the Amp and the subwoofer blue wire (tells it to turn on) to the blue wire from the Stereo (which tells the Amp to turn on) connection on the Amp. The ground wire was shorter so I grounded it to the bottom of the back seat (where I was going to mount the subwoofer originally).
I fired it up and the subwoofer didn't work, the controller lit up but no sound I changed the input switch from speaker line to RCA and it worked. There is now a lot of base My Wife has only 30% hearing in 1 ear only but she could hear it and she could definitely feel it when she sat in the seat. I did notice a warm electronic smell but it disappeared I think just because it was new? the controller is supposed to limit the input if it gets too high.
I don't usually bother with Amps etc but as it was already installed I thought I should complete the sound system with a subwoofer. Overall I am very happy with the result. It was a fair bit of work for me trying to squeeze to get to the back seat and trying to get to the Amp connections which is mounted in the boot ( the lid gets in the way and I have a lot of loose gravel on my tarmac drive from the winter gravel that gets blown from the streets it is for traction on snow covered roads as salt doesn't work below -10C) also I am pushing 60 so I am not young anymore. My brain says 20 but my body says no way Bud.
Good luck with whatever you choose and let us know how it goes.
