In the book, Factory-Original Mini by James Taylor it indicates that the range of serial numbers for a Mk2 is between M-A2S6-507001 and M-A2S6-714811. I believe, but can’t be certain, that only the engine number would indicate that the car is an auto and would contain an ‘A’ as a variant identifier.

Hi all, I have a 1968 Morris mini .I can just about make out the vin number as the plate is rather corroded. I think it reads M/ A2S4 S xxxxxx M

Top tip, it is often easier to read the rear.
I guess it is not a UK built car.

Was it made in NZ or was it made in Aus?
I don't know the NZ numbering but YMA2S4 is a number for a matic in Australia.

Hi, what do you mean read the rear?
I assume he means take the plate off and look at the stamped impressions from the back side where there is less rust and grot
but I may be wrong

Hi,
The other way to get a clearer reading of the number is to cover it with masking tap and then little rub it with a pencil and that should highlight the numbers and letters.

UK registration documents have the chassis/VIN number on them and you can also find the VIN number using the vehicle registration number on some HPI type searches....not sure about other countries systems.
