You are by no means the first to have found the snag with Ripspeed HiLos.

They ought to be sold with a length of hex bar fixed in the rear ones.

I have never seen it, but I have heard that some people thumped the end of a length of hex bar on an anvil to swage it slightly out of shape, force it into the HiLo and cut it off, with a bit protruding from the back of the subframe.

I seem to remember that another snag was that there was no lock nut and they used to gradually screw themselves lower.

They're not too bad to judge where the holes in the rear valance need to be. With the rear wheel removed and the hilo installed you can judge the vertical position for drilling the valance by aligning a straight edge, by eye with the hilo extension rod until it intersects the valance.
From beneath the car, if you look up between the subframe and valance you'll be able to see the hole that the hilo allen key has to pass through, so you can judge the position in the valance from side to side.
Drill a small hole to start with and look through to see how accurately aligned you are. If spot on just open up the hole with a step drill. If it's a bit off, file the hole to the right size and position.

You can always put a grommet in it. So go oversize.

If you fit up a bare subframe, you could use an extension like this;-

To drill a pilot hole.

If you don't want a hole in the valance , you can get away with not having one ... It's a little bit awkward but once you've done it a few times its not that bad. You can cut the hex key just long (and short) enough to fit a socket on (weld or pin it to the hex) and then use a ratchet to turn it. I can just get the hex at the right angle to go into the larger hole on the rear subframe and then feed it into the hi-lo and get the ratchet on.

Most of them don’t need a hole cutting now as they have two hex adjusters.
