1967 austin Mk1 cooper S 1275 with SU electric fuel pump. It's taking a long time to start engine. Can the fuel flow back into the tanks after shut off and do I need a non-return valve?

The fuel may flow back to the tank but I cannot see how it would syphon from the carburetor fuel bowl, so these should have enough fuel in them to start the engine.

No, the fuel will remain in the bowl.

The electric pump will also provide fuel quickly.

If you are having starting issues I recommend testing the voltage while cranking.
