I am searching for documentation on the automatic gearbox as mounted on the Japanese (JDM) Mini's. I do have a workshop manual but it only describes the manual gearbox, not the automatic gearbox. Are there other documents available that do cover this automatic gearbox?

The reason for asking this is that I have the impression that there is a misalignment between the gearbox lever and the gearbox in my car. Especially between Neutral and Reverse is the gearbox doing something different than what the lever indicates. I don't know whether this means that a cable has come loose, or that there is an adjustment screw that I need to adjust. My car is one of the 1990's Japanese Mini, with automatic gearbox, SPi engine, A/C, and an MPi-style fusebox in the passenger cabin.

Thank you mab01uk, these resources are very helpful!

The document titled Mini-auto-gear-box has a drawing of the gear selector lever as it is in my car (page #20 of the pdf, picture number 44M0016). It also describes how to check and adjust the cable. This is a good first step for me to execute.

The selector adjustment is on the transmission end, as you will see in those pdf's, having put a spacer at the D end of the handle. I forget the exact dimensions (they are listed somewhere there), but it is around 2 mm or so.

You may also find that wear has taken place in the pivots of the shift lever. My R is not right on, even though the rest is.

Thank you. Yes, I found the adjustment procedure and was able to adjust accordingly. Now all is fine.
