RIP Marianne Faithfull the quintessential girl of the sixties.







"Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78. Tributes have poured in for the star whose hits included 'As Tears Go By', which was written by The Rolling Stones' Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Alongside her music career, Faithfull also acted in films including 'The Girl on a Motorcycle', as well as theatre productions."

I don't wish to speak ill of the dead, but sometimes things are not as we might imagine.

 

I recognise that Mini by its Cosmic wheels.  I was behind it at a Knightsbridge filling station in the 60s, after a day at the Racing Car Show.

 

In those days, "A Pump Attendant" put the fuel in your car, took your money and brought you change.

 

The driver in front seemed to be having trouble with her money, getting out of the car (in a very short mini skirt), lifting the seat and scrabbling on the floor, whereupon the attendant only put in one gallon, and when the car wouldn't start, beckoned to me to help push her off the forecourt.

 

As I had to open the bonnet for screen-wash, I asked the attendant "Is that who I think it is?".  "Yea"  he said "You'd think she'd be rolling in dough, but all this winter we've had to jump start her and if we don't take the money first, she'll drive off without paying"

The general public, spoon fed by the tabloid press, more often than not have a totally false impression of the earnings of a "pop star".

 

I've known a number of musicians in the business who, despite appearing regularly on 'Top of the Pops', earned less than I did from a 36hr a week office job, in Town.

The mismatch between what people, including long time "friends", believe to be the case and the actuality of the financial position of the "stars" has led to isolation, and many of the casualties of the "music industry".

I've known a number of musicians in the business who, despite appearing regularly on 'Top of the Pops', earned less than I did from a 36hr a week office job, in Town.

The mismatch between what people, including long time "friends", believe to be the case and the actuality of the financial position of the "stars" has led to isolation, and many of the casualties of the "music industry".

Many sixties bands and "pop stars" also signed 'management' contracts in their early days which were bad business deals in the long term and severely impacted their future earnings, especially if/when their popularity declined or they moved on.....even the Beatles own percentage of earnings from world tours, record sales and song royalties, etc were considered a very poor deal compared to what some musicians and bands were able to negotiate in the industry in later years.
