ice just brought my first mini, a 2000 Mini Cooper sport, are the auxiliary switches beneath the centre of the dash, hazard, fog, brake test etc, supposed to be backlit at night with the headlights on? 
apologies if it seems a silly question.

Mostly. There's a bulb inside if they have a window. The smaller terminals on the side connect to it. Some have a 2nd window that's only exposed when the rocker is in the on position to act as a tell tale. If they have only one window, but are required to have a tell-tale they won't illuminate.

No, they aren't backlit. You need to learn which is which, by feel. Tell tales, where appropriate should light when the switches are on.
