Hi all,I,m soon going to fit a new water pump to my (998 carb model ) mini, the current one has bypass hose connected, As my heater has been disconnected (dont need one where I live, aircon fitted) I was wondering would there be any advantage of doing away with the bypass set up after capping off the inlet of course and installing water pump without bypass? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest yes, plug it up.
All they do is dump hot coolant back in to the Water Pump from the Head, By-passing the Radiator. They were designed for a different Thermostat that's long been NLA.

How do you cap off the head (reliably) when in situ?

How do you cap off the head (reliably) when in situ?
Leave the bypass hose on the cylinder head, but detached from the water pump.
Cut all but 3/4" off a bolt that fits snugly in the bypass hose.
Cut enough off the bypass hose to allow for the head of the bolt between the water pump and the dangling hose.
Insert the bolt in the hose as a plug. Fit and tighten the Jubilee clip.
If you have removed it, refit the water pump.

Minispares do a rubber blanking cap, or alternatively a blanking plug which seals off the cylinder head end.

I've always suggested, that unless the car is regularly being driven in hotter climates, to leave plugging this system up if all in situ as all too often, the adaptor in the head is not in good condition, so sometimes, it's best to leave sleeping dogs lay. If however, the head has to come off for some reason (rusted by-pass adaptor, blown head gasket, ULP conversion etc), take the opportunity to plug it up then. If it's regularly driven in warmer / hotter climates, then I do advocate removing the head and plugging it. It can be a gamble trying to do it in situ.
