Wheel/hub Question

Hi all,

 

I have a set of old rims I was about to put some snow tires on for a gravel/snow autotest this weekend and I've hit my learning curve again.  It doesn't appear that the rim wants to go onto the hub of my (we think) '75 rallycar.  Assuming the hub is from something else?

I did buy a set of new rims for it a couple years ago and they fit fine - in fact, the hub on them feels a little loose even...but not these old rims.

Certainly not a standard mini brake caliper.

Quick check on the net came up with this. Designed for 13" rims.

The drive flange is from a Metro the 4 bolts look sub standard. Calipers after market ones.

 

remove the 4 lugs and you should have no problems with Mini 12/13 rims.

And just to clarify, by 'remove the 4 lugs' you're meaning just chop them off?  I love my angle grinder but getting it in there looks tough.  Sawzall maybe.

 

I need to dig into some diagrams and learn the pieces that go into axles, etc.  35 years of old Mini ownership and it's my first time dealing with it.  Obviously on this car when I rebuild it I'll want whatever is the most stout setup.

those are nice calipers! they are homologated for the group a mg metro / turbo. but not on standard discs. nice none the less.

do they mount directly to the flange with no special adaptor?

yes. item 2 is the caliper and item 1 is the disc. 250mm diameter. 213standard. Nice that these calipers still exist unlike much of the other things in the homologation papers.

 

havning raced my metro for a long time I don't think I need the extra diameter. with expensive enough pads i'm perfectly capable of locking up the semi-slicks at considerable speed, even in the dry.

i would install new drive flanges:

 

"This is Minispares version of the Metro vented disc type drive flange, made without the original Metro wheel centralising lugs. The wheel centralising lugs as originally used on the Metro have been removed to allow the fitment of all types of Mini wheels. These flanges must be fitted when using vented discs. Fits all vented disc type derivatives such as ERA and Metro Turbos. Sold singly,2 per car required"

I've done it with an angle grinder. It's pretty easy with the studs out, just go gently at the end & stop when you get to the wheel mounting face. They're for the vented discs. There was a non vented version, but it was interchangeable with Mini flanges. 

 

Minispares do 'em pre chopped, as well as the correct bolts.

 

They also do special bolts for putting Metro (M10 hole) calipers on to Mini (3/8unf thread) swivel hubs.
