At school, I remember the poetry teacher telling us about an Islamic Bard, who used to make steam engines.

 

He had trouble with nuts coming loose, so he had them put on an anvil and hit with a hammer to make them oval.

 

Of course, it wouldn't be allowed in England, but he was a foreigner, from the 'Kingdom of Brunei',

 

Or was it Brunel ?

my old chevette rocker nuts kept comming loose AA patrol man did the same thing, ok after that. Same as stamping top of a standard nut 3 times with end of a chisel to make 3 small v's. Both bodges that work

From what I remember from my old Salisbury days the bolt heads are oval-ish with a flat on one side. The bolt head is also only around 2mm thick due to clearances needed when the joint is at full movement.
To be honest I can see why these are expensive now. I wouldn't have thought they would sell millions of them these days.
