"As police forces replace their road signs, ‘collision’ signs will replace those saying ‘accident’, as will visible messages on rear-facing in-car police notice boards. Blue ‘Police Accident’ signs are used by police at the roadside to warn road users to proceed with caution. Police forces across the UK will now be able to replace ‘Police Accident’ signs with ‘Police Collision’ signs, following approval from the Department for Transport (DfT). The change aims to reflect the preventable nature of most road crashes and promote greater accountability."

accident suggests no-one at fault, insurers don't like it

collision is a statement of fact and investigation to confirm fault

it's been that way for a while in terminology at least perhaps they just haven't got rid of all the old signs yet

If only they could get the Beeb to stop using the euphemistic "when a car went out of control".

I've never heard them say "a plane went out of control", not when there's a chance of saying "pilot error".

Odd, I've always thought.

Hi,

I would have thought a totally unnecessary change. The police forces, sorry Constabularies, do not have enough money to do the job they have to do. Why waste money on changing a sign.

If a car is rolled due to a blow out and hits nothing else that is not a collision it is an accident. A collision is still an accident nobody intended to do it.

So long as the message is got across to other motorists approaching an incident, whether or not a collision or an accident, that is the important point.

If a see an accident sign I don't say to myself oh no one at fault then I think god I hope it is not serious and proceed with the appropriate caution.

Another case of jobs worth I think. Somebody trying to justifying working from home.

As a pedant I'm obliged (defo not obligated) to point out the opposite is true.

Inanimate objects can collide. To have an accident you have to be capable of intent, but not exercise it.

If they weren't accidents somebody would be guilty of dangerous driving, at least.

Can we not just change them to "car bump"

Worth it for the comedy value alone...

I'd rather it was left as it is to save money.

For the last 30+ years  that I’ve been involved in the accident repair business we had to report it as an  RTA

A couple of years ago we had to  change it  to RTC ?

Quick question why don’t I work in the collision repair business?

Glad to see the police are tackling the most important issues we are facing.  We'll all sleep better at night knowing they have new signs.

Police will still leave them at the side of the roads for months making them completely useless when an actual bump/collision/accident happens.

Then the council will come along and mowog the grass over them and break them all...

I remember back when police cars had 'WIDE LOAD" SIGNS..They usually only read "ide loa" with the w and d being down each front wing or wrapped around the boot somewhat...

Back in the day........
