Does anyone have any insight in to any kind of order in which to paint my newly refurbished engine? I'm at a turning point where I can choose to fully rebuild then paint, or paint then rebuild. My block is completely bare, the gearbox is rebuilt, the diff is stripped down, the head is still assembled. Any ideas, tips or tricks welcomed!

Paint after each part have been stripped and cleaned. Before rebuild.

 

if you are after a BMC look do it after the full rebuild as they just covered everything with paint.

Personally I paint the block and head after they've been assembled, means there's less turning it around and scratching it. Mask everywhere, and any paint you get on mating surfaces you can remove with a bit of wire wool.

I prefer to paint parts prior to assembly. Gearbox case, transfer case and wok I leave in clean bare alloy.

Try and paint it with some reasonable temperature. The pint will not stick if it is too cold.

Brush painting i have found to be easiest and more,precise.

Speak to your paint supplier for requirement for any form of under coat.

paint mine with head only fitted then mask up where needed. out of interest tried normal primer and paint as cheper alternative to engine paint with engine warm, not hot, and years later colour is still spot on. One gold and one lime green, you may not like the colour but proves my point this method works.

Interesting, thank you! I've got some high temp engine enamel, plus relevant primer and clear top coat. I'd heard setting the heat gun near (not too near!) the block to get it warm before painting was a preferred method. I think from the sounds of this, I'm going to assemble the short block and head, then paint - without the gearbox. Has anyone got recommendations for a clear coat for the aluminium parts? I don't want any dirt and oil to seep into it, as I've heard from others?
