Hey All,

my brake lights just stopped working today(1996 SPI mini from Japan). here is what goes on. when i apply brakes i dont have brake lights, i loose turn signals/emergency signals. when i release the brakes, turns/hazards come back and a audible beep is heard. no fuses blown. all bulbs good. have not tested the brake switch. anyone else have this issue? electrical issues seemed to come up after i installed Hella 500 lights to fuse one and ran the activate wire to the high beem wire. any help would be appreciated!!

Sounds like a earth issue to me.. is the battery earth connection a good one?

Try disconnecting the Hella's see if things work again.

sounds like you have an earth fault on brake circuit but not drawing enough current to blow a fuse. i would check connections on brake switch fitted to pedal or rear light cluster next to fuel tank

I had some interesting intermittent electrical issues whenever I had shopping in the boot. It turned out the insulation had fallen off the wires going into one of the rear light clusters. They're basically just flopping around in the back near the lights and were getting shorted to earth. So worth checking that.

I dont know about the SPI but my 72 has a pressure sensor for the brake light, mine was replaced before I bought it, seems like they fail too.

Check if your car uses the same system.

Any luck yet? Maybe have a look at the back of the fuse box also very common for them to corrode and cause such issues.
