I suppose car tyres are shredded / grated on the roads all the time .

and the bits grated off are tiny , but in normal use I wouldn't think it was a massive problem .

most of it will stay in the road surface ?

some will be washed into drains .

I am now very cynical of 'experts' , and now see this as another future tax grab .

This is Saudi ...

they won't get taxed for that .

Also this topic comes up related to heavier Electric Vehicles (due to batteries) creating increased environmental pollution from tyre nanoparticles of rubber cast off onto the road and into the atmosphere near ground height. As with micro plastic particles and man made clothing fibres this all ends up in the air and sooner or later going down the drains and eventually comes back in our water supplies...no one really knows the long term effects on human health yet.

I’d expect that it’s more dangerous than most of the other stuff that vehicles leave behind, and EV’s are leaving more of it behind than  ICE vehicles purely because of their weight.

As per PoolGuy

From a independent report in 2002 - 'Toxic particulates from tyre wear almost 2,000 times worse than from exhausts as weight of cars increases'

Looks like air pollution in metropolitan centres will only get worse with more ev's being encouraged onto the road...well until technology brings down the weight of ev's

When one of these EV's spectacularly catches fire like they do I wonder how many ICE cars worth of nastiness ends up in the atmosphere?

Well unless the EV is 3 years old it hasn’t even offset its co2 compared to an ICE, so going up in smoke makes it even less environmentally friendly than it already was.

I know that getting rid of tyres is a big problem - maybe the tyre manufacturers should be tasked with finding a way to recycle/dispose of them - if they were forced to take back the used items it would focus them more quickly I think

Bit like cars having to be a certain percentage recyclable but it doesn't say how hard or easy it has to be to do that and whilst the manufacturers aren't responsible for the recycling they don't really care how hard (expensive) it is to do it

I’m fairly sure that most tyres are already recycled?

I always thought the disposal fee was for recycling. Maybe it's just stolen by whoever is in government at the time. 😁

Most of the time we are probably really paying to send them to third world countries for them to use. Because they are then "resold" they are classed as recycled. They probably don't recycle them once they are done with them.

E-Waste works the same way. It gets sold overseas and because it's sold it's not just going to landfill supposedly. I've never looked into it but from what I understand the law requires working devices to not go to landfill. That means it gets sold to other countries.

I understand that they get recycled and used for swimming pool surrounds, driveways, tennis courts, kids playground surfaces, horse menages, underlay, road surfaces etc etc.

World's Biggest Tyre Graveyard Kuwait's Sulaibiya On Fire (2021)

"The world's biggest tyre graveyard Kuwait's Sulaibiya burning in 2021. The fire was so widespread that it was visible from space.

This dump carries around seven million used tyres & has now become an environmental hazard."

Isn't it sunny... We've been shredding tires for close to 130 years. We've had heavy vehicles on the roads for 125 years...

Recently, someone puts a tire on an Electric vehicle - and NOW it is an outrage!

Seems the outrage is a bit late (if not misplaced altogether)...

See here:

"Microplastics found in every human testicle in study.

- Scientists say discovery may be linked to decades-long decline in sperm counts in men around the world"

https://www.theguard...dy-sperm-counts

https://www.npr.org/...s-humans-health

The tendency for tires to wear in EVs is impacted by people's tendency to enjoy the available acceleration in an EV - a proven issue. Seems people like the instant power provided - and they use it - shredding rubber like never before...

Initially, EVs used the same tires as ICE vehicle equivalents and yes, they got shredded (from weight - but ALSO from liberal use of the skinny pedal).

We've had high load / high mileage tires available in the world for a long time (e.g. Commercial vehicles). But only more recent demand from EVs prompted manufacturers to use these compounds for applications / tire sizes appropriate for most EVs (passenger cars). Now we have dedicated passenger EV tires at load ratings you would not want to use in an ICE vehicle (they'd be too stiff!) despite the fact that they'd last forever in a light vehicle.

In the year 2024, EV tire warranties are on a par with conventional ICE tires. Not bad. (EV Tire Mileage warranties are in the 50-60k mile range. Some 'performance' EV tires are up at 45k miles...)

That plastic in your b@lls... It is likely NOT from an EV's tires.

Silly facts... not to distract from people's willingness to be outraged at an EV...
