Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum and i live in the Netherlands. Since i'm not from the UK i might have a strange question about styling my '90 mini mayfair.

I would like to reupholster my interior. I would like to go for the Scottish Tartan because i really like the look of it however, i have some union jack accessories.

Furthermore i'm considering the union jack on the headrests too.

I'm not really into the history of the UK but i've visited Scotland last year. I have seen to notice that the Scotish are not that fond on British citizens. Therefore, my question:

Is it socially accepted within the UK to have the tartan fabric combined with the union flag?

Not posting this to start a roar, actually trying to prevent a roar in the future when visiting the UK ;).

Kind regards,

Tom

The Union Jack has sunk further in Scotland's esteem and is very much seen as the flag of those who, despite Scotland overwhelmingly voting to 'Remain', dragged the Scots out of the Union that they wished to remain in.

Further salt in the wound, caused by scaring some Scots out of voting for Independence, a few years earlier, on the basis that they were "better staying in the Union".

I'd go with whatever you're happy with. A small amount of Tartan upholstery does look great in my opinion, and was used on British cars in the 70s, as well as the Advanced Passenger Train (APT) but that's another story.

interestingly the union jack is so named after King James of Scotland (he took the English throne as well bringing the two countries into one) , so technically. they came up with it first

the reason Wales has nothing to do with the flag is that around that time, wales was considered legally 'England' having already been conquered - so they've got more reason to dislike it, in that respect

I can't imagine in normal day to day life there's many people who would care enough to be upset by it

just a minor point to note, when you say 'British' that means English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Ireland and anyone else that comes here and gets citizenship, it's a broad term for everyone.  so really what you mean to say is, you found that [some] Scottish people aren't too fond of English people.  fair to say there's a little bit of history behind that but let's not go into all the detail here

Probably something to be more aware of is there isn’t a single “Scottish Tartan” but multiple different designs that have origins usually based in families or ‘clans’. Clearly you. can only choose one that is suitable as a vehicle upholstery fabric so your choice may be limited.

Maybe take a look at JCS Custom Trim on Instagram for some ideas: https://www.instagra...nE2cnQ5bWM0NG9j
Jon has re-upholstered a number of interiors with a tartan theme.
