You just have to look at the rules for entering the World Lying Championships.

No polititions allowed as they are considered to be professionals.

I can see this thread running for a while 👍
Nothing like politics to get the passion out in the open 😁

Surely it’s just a bit of tongue in cheek bantering speaking for myself hell would freeze over before I would expect it to make any difference at all to the issue. Who remembers Eddie in 72 promising to “cut prices at a stroke” and were still waiting!

Any chance that we can leave politics out of the forum? It's never going to end well, especially as we have a labour government who are intent on ruining all the good that the conservatives did.

That made me chuckle, I hope that’s what was intended.

Either way, I agree with the first part. Politics on this forum doesn’t work. No one is going to change their mind so we all end up thinking the other person is a moron, naive, or both. I remember the Brexit thread and still think less of some that posted.

I tend to agree... But it is an interesting topic to discuss.

We all like minis, so how daft can any mini forum member be with that in mind? (Do not answer that!   :D )

Perhaps make the topic allowed in some obscure section at the bottom of the threads?

Whoever is in power the following could apply

It may be out of date, but it’s a great way to understand how our tax system works.

Suppose that once a week, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this...

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay £1.
The sixth would pay £3.
The seventh would pay £7.
The eighth would pay £12.
The ninth would pay £18.
And the tenth man (the richest) would pay £59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the pub every week, happy with the arrangement until, one day, the owner caused them a little problem. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your weekly beer by £20." Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So, the first four would still drink for free but what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

So, they decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (a100% saving).
The sixth man now paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33% saving).
The seventh man now paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28% saving).
The eighth man now paid £9 instead of £12 (a 25% saving).
The ninth man now paid £14 instead of £18 (a 22% saving).
And the tenth man now paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16% saving).

Each of the last six was better off than before with the first four continuing to drink for free.

Once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got £1 out of the £20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got £10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a £1 too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get £10 back, when I only got £2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next week the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important - they didn't have enough money between all of them to pay for even half of the bill!

And that, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed.
For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

What a fabulous analogy, particularly the part about drinking overseas.

Currently the thread is under review and we are keeping an eye on it.

It is in the correct place in the forum for off topic and general chit chat and providing it remains amicable and on track the thread can stay open.

HOWEVER as soon as it starts to go sideways it will be closed.

It would get quite interesting if the petition was to eventually exceed 9.7 million votes.....

"Due to lower turnout, Labour won fewer votes in the 2024 election than at the 2019 election they lost under Jeremy Corbyn, at 9.7 million (2024) compared to 10.3 million (2019).

Labour’s total vote share was 33.8 per cent in 2024, a minute increase from 32.2 per cent in 2019, and well below the Tories’ 43.6 per cent in the previous election."

So very much a case of not losing the election, rather than winning it.

I feel this issue isn't unique to the UK but most western governments from what I have seen.

None of the elected Governments around the world listen to the people they represent - after getting on to office.

They tell the people what they want to hear leading up to elections, they run away after, blind and deaf, on some tangent that goes against the grain.

I have to admit, I was dreading the thought of the possibility of Trump being re-elected - and since US politics have a world wide effect, I feel ripped off that we all don't get a vote. However, since his re-election, I am, perhaps naively, seeing him as anti-establishment and pushing back. While I can't stand his outright brash BS at least his is transparent and obvious, unlike the others who continually con us all, giving us false hopes and disappointment.

World wide, the developed countries living standards have dropped significantly over the passed 15 or so years. I do look to our politicians - of all colours - for letting this happen, but at the bottom of t all, I feel it's being bought on by the world being over populated.

( Keeping it neutral )

A lot of the problems with the world today ,

is that the ruling classes are very remote from ordinary people .

Whether you are Right ,  Left , or Central , you have to admit

Those in power , don't walk the same streets as us . they don't have to live with their decisions .

Apart from blocking the streets or a general strike , this petition seems to be the only way to show our displeasure .

2,881,395 signatures . (Slowing now ... )

https://petition.par...jwt7cQ23qEGxVdw

Maybe a good time to close this post , and see what happens on 6 January 2025 .

to me it's like choosing to tread in dog/cat sh#t, both highly unpleasant.

Nobody has ever so perfectly described how i feel about voting.  Thank you.  :highfive:
