Hi folks! When braking on a straight line at high speed, the steering wheel vibrates a lot. Opinions please.

Thanks in advance!

I would start by checking the discs aren't warped or pads very worn.

Then check the front tyres are properly balanced.

Could be a million things and only trial and error will find the culprit. Start with the easiest cheapest jobs and go from there.
Pads or shoes, wheel balance, wheel alignment, steering geometry, discs or drums, suspension issues.

I would look at the brakes first. Are the disks warped or anything? Mine does that bit if you brake hard. Drums on the front and they're fairly new so idk what it is either. I might take them off and have look.

Firstly, I assume that you have disc brakes. From experience with a race Mini with discs the cause of steering wheel vibration has always been excessive brake disc run out/warped disc.

The limit of measured run out was , to me, surprisingly small, around 0.08mm or 0.003" , The first time we experience it I just changed ,what were in racing terms quite old, front discs and the vibration ceased. The second occasion was dissapointingly soon and this time I measured the run out and found one disc at approx 7 thou of an inch run out, so both were again changed and the vibration ceased. I guess that the quality of the brake discs and of course the extreme use in racing is a significant factor.

So suspect the brake discs first, also check out your ball joints and tie rod ends for any play.

How are the wheel stud holes looking? If they don't have inserts check for the stud holes being ovaled
