Err job done as far as the advert is concerned I'd say! Done exactly what it set out to do, cause a stink & get media coverage. If they'd have done an ad with a car driving down a desert/country/otherworldly road every viewer would be "Oh there's a new Jag out, meh!, haven't released anything decent in years". The odd car fan may have written words about a beautiful new model on social media car threads or forums like this, but the wider public wouldn't see them. What this advert has done is set the internet on fire, everyone's discussing it even the news outlets (and GBeebees News). The word Jaguar has passed more lips in the last 48 hours than it has in probably the last 10 years. So fair play to the adverting "wonks in their thick rimmed glasses", job done.
The truth here is in the press releases from Jag talking about removing unprofitable cars from it's line up. I was only saying to someone last week that I couldn't even tell them what was in Jag line up these days. I was shocked to find them still pedalling the XE, XF, E-Pace & F-Pace. Fact is these weren't as good as their respective class leaders at launch & were all well overdue a replacement. Truth is their traditional market has abandoned them, sales between 2018 record and 2022 were down 66%. They were all over our company car list but nobody chose them, there was brief flourish when the XE was released, but that tailed off quickly. I live in a city with a JLR plant, and you don't see any of them about even though they offer big staff discounts. If you can't sell to discount stock to staff you've got a problem! The sales of Range Rover & Land Rover have been keeping them afloat for a long time as far as I can see. So it's dramatic change, new markets or die.
Question for me is what direction does their rebrand take them? We talking small volume high end luxury cars, or mass market executive cars? The traditional European exec brands; BMW, Audi etc. are falling behind in the transition to EV so perhaps now is the time for Jag to storm the latter market with some really good stuff. We wait until December 2nd to see.
