I fancy fitting one of these dashets to the Mk1, I already have a Racetech tacho, one of those Smiths twin reading oil pressure/water temp gauges, but I'm not sure what to put in the spare hole. Normally I have an exact idea but in this instance no, so which would be better an Ammeter or Volt meter or something totally different. What ever suggestions they have to have a use.

A voltmeter is easiest to fit. An Ammeter if wired as per the original way is dangerous and requires harness modification. But there is a safer way of doing it but I forget what is needed. Oil pressure is a good one.

A voltmeter is by far a much better and much more useful gauge, easier to wire. Only needs an ign live and a neg.
An ammeter needs full battery cuurent and sized wore to suit, not something you want on your dash.

OIl , Volts , Vacuum . temp

Vacuum can tell you a lot about the engine condition & potential problems .

as above ammeter wiring can be nasty unless done remotely .

oil temp is also useful esp with gearbox using the same oil .

The two must haves for me personally is Oil Temp and Oil Pressure, currently i have Oil pressure and Vacuum, (purely because i had the guage and gap to fill before i get my oil temp plumbed in)

I think the other useful gauge would be AFR in leu of Vacuum gauge.

As above stay away from ammeter . If your still running a dynamo the volt gauge could be useful . My personal preference is vacuum gauge.

I think a wide band gauge is a good investment as you can see if the mixture is too rich or weak, both potentially disastrous for an engine. They don't look retro but you could put it out of site and only using it during tuning.

Also I think a clock is really useful, I find it surprising how many times I glance at it during a journey.

I agree with fitting a clock. It's great to know what time it is to see if you can stop on your way to get somewhere on time.

A voltmeter will be perfect with the alternator. If you wanred to free up 1 of the gauge holes for some other purpose you could fit a voltmeter/clock 8n thee ashtray hole.
