"Thousands of people have signed a petition to reverse plans to change the name of a pub after it was labelled "offensive".
Owners Greene King announced last week that The Midget in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, would be changed after more than 1,300 people signed a petition.
Since the announcement, a counter petition to restore the pub's name has received the support of 2,600.
The pub was named after the eponymous MG car that had been built at a factory in the town until the 1970s - but the term is more-commonly known as a derogatory way of referring to people with dwarfism. Greene King said the pub's name would be changed to 'The Roaring Raindrop' in tribute to the last ever record-breaking car by MG to be manufactured in Abingdon."

The pub is located in a road called 'Midget Close' Abingdon OX14 5NR so presumably the council will also have to rename the offensive road...
I suppose the 'Midget and Sprite Club' could be renamed the 'Spridget Club' which is the term many car enthusiasts use to describe both versions of the sports car or maybe all MG Midgets will have to be badge engineered into Austin-Healey Sprites?

Why is the name of a classic car offensive?

Why don’t they call it the ”MG MIDGET” then in brackets underneath ( named after the eponymous car that brought prosperity and jobs to the town in the 20th century)
Then the uneducated feint hearted dimwits under, let’s say 35 can take their phones away from there ears for 5 mins and look it up, job done.

Without wishing to be controversial, and I live nowhere near the pub … The Midget pub is stated as named after the MG Midget car … which was named such because it was the smaller sibling to the MGB.

I very much doubt with the passage of time the MG Midget would get that name if being built now.

A compromise might be to tag line the new name with something such as “formerly the Midget of MG fame”.

Just leave the name as it has always benn and tell the precious whingers to drink elsewhere.
And if you really want to annoy them say you are going for a bishops finger in the midget. ;-)

I think you’d struggle to find anyone who’s genuinely offended by the name of that pub, unless you come across a really grumpy shortarse.

I'm sure it's just a case of misunderstanding, people don't realise the car connection they just think it means short people or whatever the current correct description is (no offence intended)

Why not just change the pub sign to a picture of the car if it isn't already or as said above just make it the 'MG midget' and people will still just refer to it as 'the midget' conversationally

Sadly that’s very true.
