I wondered about taxing my car monthly rather than for the year.

 

Do others do it this way and then sorn it when the winter arrives?

 

How does work out in practice?

 

What would be the best time of the month to do it?

Least expensive is tax it for 12 months, on the 1st of any month. If you don't intend to use/park it on the road, SORN it, online, on the last day of the month. The DVLA will refund you the unused months VED.

we used to tax it for 6 mnths beginning of may then sorn again end of october when tax again becomes due, then retax may the next year,

You're still taxing the car for a year, or 6 months.

 

You'd just be paying by monthly direct debit.

 

If you didn't declare SORN they'd still keep collecting your payments. I presume your first DD payment will up to the end of that month, so you'd need to declare SORN before the month end, not the payment date, to avoid the next payment being taken.

 

.....The puzzler is why they still offer 6 months when it's cheaper to do direct debit whether over 6 or 12 months

You can't tax for 6 months and pay by monthly direct debit.

 

The cheapest is a single 12 month payment, or the single 12 month payment made on a DD basis (single annual payment) which are both the same cost;

Next cheapest is 6 months tax made by DD (single payment every 6 months);

Next is making a single payment for 6 months tax, non-DD;

Most expensive option is monthly by DD. This is not time constrained and applies for as little as 1 month, or rolls over annually but is still monthly, this is why there is no 6 month, pay monthly DD option.

 

I usually tax for around 8 months weather dependent so just set up a monthly DD each spring, it's the least hassle.

My Cooper costs £210 to tax for 12 months.

6 months costs £115.50

I’d you pay monthly by direct debit it costs £18.38 per month, or £220.50 per year.

So what I do is pay 12 months up front by credit card, and then cancel it after 6 months and get a refund of £105, thus saving a whole £10. And thus they costing the DVLA money as they send a bloody cheque in the post for the refund.

It’s not a pay-monthly for 6 months DD, it’s 6 months tax paid by DD every 6 months, not the same. Maybe read it again, it’s definitely quite confusing!

It's half of the 12 month DD fee & less than the 6 month single payment. 

 

Yes, the only options are to tax your car for a whole year or a 6 month period however you pay.
