Hello, jack jones from England

We have had a 1987 mini in the family for roughly 20 years which was my brothers first car passed down from our dad. He blew up 2 engines then left it to rot for about 10 years after having kids (needed a bigger car).

About 5 years ago we slowly started stripping it down to a frame and welding new floor panels, sills, wings, A panels etc and we managed to get it painted and subframes back on so its now a rolling shell but a couple years ago we tried to tackle the wiring loom but after weeks of trying to figure it out winter came and its been forgotten.

I have the mini itch and need some advice and motivation to get started again. If I can get the wiring loom sorted out the rest will follow.

welcome! and good luck with it

if you've got the whole loom pulled out and on a bench most of it can be checked with a simple meter set to continuity

bear in mind some of the old switchgear will likely be gunked up or melted away and causing issues, hazard warning switch is a standard example, also the indicator stalks can get iffy with age.  but just testing the wiring itself is a good starting point to rule out breaks and shorts

another thing to look out for is if you have ballasted or non-ballasted ignition, not really an issue either way but you'll come across times when knowing one or the other will help diagnosis.  can be changed from ballast to standard if you prefer

it's also a good time to upgrade the headlight wiring, use the existing wires to switch a relay and run nice new fatter wiring to the lamp holders

and if you have the dim-dip lighting relay that can all be cut out and wired though if you want

wiring diagrams are here  https://www.theminif...agrams-redrawn/

Welcome to TMF.

Maybe you could elaborate on the issue with the wiring loom. I'm no expert but others maybe able to help with a better understanding of the problem.

You can buy complete looms which could be an easier option.

Thank you.

the loom is out of the car and just a big mess, iv pinned it to a wooden board trying to make sense of it. iv got a few different Haynes books from different years but none of the wire colours seem to add up.

Like you said its probably best to buy a new loom and start fresh.
