Hi all

I bought a Mini Equinox, but didn't have a toolkit. I bought a jack apparently for a Mini from someone in our village, but it's too big for the hole in the sill. Looks like it's for a larger BL/Rover car. Anyone got a spare jack deffo for a 96 Mini they want to sell (or swap for a larger BL model!)

I just carry a small scissor jack in the car and use under the subframe of whatever corner I need to lift. For home use I use a trolley jack.

Do a search on eBay for “Classic Mini Jack”, there’s a few on there.

A scissor jack is a better option in my opinion. The factory one  fouls the doors, will have you on 2 wheels, instead of 3 & will go through your sills if the jacking points aren't in good condition.

I used to claim Metro jacks from the scrappers, they're pretty solid & fitted inside a 12 inch wheel - one or two on Fleabay still.

I didn't fancy using the factory jack. Read that it can cause damage to the jacking point, and it looks really puny. Bought one of these from eBay. Comes in a zip up case that you can also put your related bits in (locking wheel nut key, wheel brace etc). I keep it in one of the rear bins as this frees up space in the boot, and it doesn't rattle around.

And buy an ice hockey puck at the same time to save your subby's paint

That sounds an awesome idea. Do they sit nicely on the top of a trolley jack lifting point? Always pile rags on mine to save damage.

you can get proper jacking pads for that purpose.. whether they're any better than a hockey puck I couldn't say but I imagine they're a little more rubbery and some have slots in them to locate nicely on a seam or an edge, or whatever

eg https://www.powerfle...ds-3551/t1.html

varied types depending how you use it and how it fits best into the top of the jack

The factory jack is supposed to be used with the door open.

If the jacking points can't hold the mini, it shouldn't be on the road.

The factory jack is perfectly adequate but yes there are many other jacks which work perfectly fine on the subframe.

True,

But I wouldn't want to have a door stuck open in some places where I could need to use the jack. It also wouldn't be a good place to discover the jacking points aren't as solid as you thought.

Hopefully we're well past the point where an outer sill would be slapped on to squeeze a year or two more use out of a banger, but there'll still be cases where what's out of sight deteriorates faster than what's covering it.
