Hi

My friend has an Estate which was cut in 3 pieces years ago. It was not allowed to import a full car so they cut it  :ohno:

Now he asks me to assemble it to one piece. I will visit the car at some point and will take some picture.

From a technical point of view is this kind of repair allowed ?

Its allowed in some places, its not allowed in others, depends how you go about the repair, if you just weld the 3 cut pieces back together, its not going to be very strong or look very good.

But if you bought proper repair panels and welded it back together the same as a restoration, then maybe its OK.

Not really able to answer properly without seeing it

how was it cut,  straight down the middle, so the roof and floor is cut in half, or cut more sensibly to keep the big panels mostly intact.?

there's ways of cutting it up that would be much easier to put back together than others... ideally you'd take the time to drill out spot welds in certain places and deconstruct it rather than just literally getting the big angle grinder out.

Even still a lot of measuring and bracing up would surely be required to make sure it's straight etc

just completely aside from legalities which I have no idea about

Magnum panels introduced the full Estate/Van floors and roof panels back in 2018, which would be the 2 key large panels ideally needed to put the shell back together, with the major welded joints in the original factory positions. Structurally the end result should then be as good as most other major Mini shell restorations with panels repaired or fully replaced (usually due to rust damage). They ribbed roof is same for all later Van/Estates (except for very early smooth roof Mk1's) and the front part of the Mk1/2 floor tunnel could be kept or cut out and replaced with the later rod change shape if required.

See link below for an example from the AA of how two crash damaged cars were sometimes joined together but NOT in a good way back in 1971 to be sold to unsuspecting buyers!
