Coolant Sensor Fault

Got an MoT at the end of the month and wanting help to try get rid of this fault
Using MemsFCR
Temp rises as normal from cold start with no faults detected
At around 88 degrees fault kicks in
Temp readings shows in red
Temp can go range between 85 to 89 ish
New sensor has been installed
88 degrees temp valve installed
Fan under wheel arch can be a little confusing , some time runs as normal but other times it just on all the time even from cold starts.
Step motor reading can be off sometimes but it does eventually get down to 32/35 and goes green.

Can you get or borrow a handheld LCD thermometer? Id check first what the actual temps you are getting are, could it be that your car is actually overheating? Rule out the simple things first.

Hi,
Yeah i had thought about that to see if i can check to see what the actual temperature of the car is while running.
The odd thing is that its all ok and the Temp gauge reads as normal in side the car. eg just below the mid line on the gauge. Then while its in the 80's it gets an error. Its also stays in the 80's and doesn't go to default 60degC as if its in limp mode.
This is the reading i get

If it is a SPi the auxiliary fan is controlled by a separate thermostatic switch in the bottom of the rad. Check the wiring at the switch for a short.
When you say a temperature fault do you mean a temperature sensor fault or temperature too high fault?

Hey
The Aux fan for instance was on yesterday from cold start and never went off on my trip into work, However today it never came on until i was well into my journey and Temp gauge was about mid way. It came on as i was waiting in a queue and then went off again. I had checked the connection and all looks good and clean.
The fault i was getting was for a Coolant Sensor Fault, but everything was ok temp wise and car running around 85DegC then it just comes up with the error.

Can you explain: The odd thing is that its all ok and the Temp gauge reads as normal in side the car. eg just below the mid line on the gauge. Then while its in the 80's it gets an error. Its also stays in the 80's and doesn't go to default 60degC as if its in limp mode.
What do you mean with default 60 dedC.?
Would be best, you publish the logfile. (From cold to running hot!)
by the way. The electric fan gets its power through one of the two relais nearby the crash switch. The one is for the heater in the manifould, the second is for the fan.If this stucks you could have a running fan all the time.Just change them one to the other. by the way with memsfcr you could activate them manually.

Hey,
The 60degC is what i've read when the mini goes into limp mode. So seemly if the coolant sensor is not working it gives a default reading on memsfcr. as you can see the temp reading is ok.
From the screen shot above you can see the coolant sensor is not showing as faulty but the coolant temp turns red and throws up an error. Coolant sensor fault and thermostat error.
It gets to about 88degC and the thermostat opens and can feel the radiator getting hot and the pipe running down to the thermostat getting hot.
The aux fan tonight kicked in about 89degC to try keep temp down.
not sure sure if i should be concerned about it

Hey Genpop,
Sorry for the delay and sorry wasn't able to get the logfile uploaded. Came up with an error that it was the wrong file type, so not sure how to fix that.
I did however take advise about the External fan relay switch being a problem and have replaced that and now things seem to be ok.
General thoughts on this was the temp error occurred just when the Temp valve opened, so think it was just a timing thing and recording temp was to high, then the external fan was not working which again made overheating slightly. Seems to be working now that the relay was swapped.
Might at some point also check out the water pump as i have no idea when this has be changed or if it has ever been changed and seems to be making a bit of a noise now as well but that will be a job for another time.
Thanks for the support everyone :)
