My 1972 minivan has been in the garage for 10 years and it's time for an outing. My first road trial did not go well. No clutch and no brakes! Both now resolved.

Drove on the road today – started off well but then lost revs and power. Removed air filter in case clogged. No real improvement. Slight pressure on accelerator pedal increased revs but pushing the pedal more reduced revs. Will check dashpot, plugs and points tomorrow. Wondering about possible distributor mechanical advance problem. Any help here appreciated…..

I would start by thoroughly cleaning the Carb out. Stale petrol will probably have gummed it up, and its a cheap place to start, only initial cost being some carb cleaner and a few gaskets

Could be a carb issue, check everything else thoroughly first before stripping the carb.

As a matter of course, change the points, condenser, cap, arm, leads and plugs as a minimum so you know you have the best spark you can get

Why waste money doing that if you don't even know if it's electrical? Given the poor quality of some new parts you could be introducing a new problem without realising.

I wonder how much rust and gum is in the tank after 10 years.

As has been indicated already, check the ignition components first. That doesn't however mean replace. The points will need cleaning after sitting and the distributor should be lubricated. Only once the ignition system is perfect do you touch the carb. It has been sitting so the carb may have issues but since it sounds like it was working correctly at first, it is unlikely to be a carb issue.

The rule of thumb here being the cheap and free fixes first, whilst keeping in mind that the carb settings shouldn't be altered until a good spark is confirmed

It wouldn't matter regardless as the ignition components would need to be changed in the near future anyway.
