I’m led to believe some ANPR systems can now identify if the plate colour is wrong for the vehicle it’s on, not a risk I’d particularly want to take.

Supermarket and retail park ANPR can't read my black/silver plates, I always assume that the speed related ANPR can read my plates.

Speed cameras are not automatic - the pictures have to be checked by a member of police staff to ensure that all details are correct.

I thought the specs cameras used anpr to track individual vehicles and work out the average speed. Oh well, everyday is a school day.

Just put COM1C on your car and let Rowan Atkinson take your points.

(Not that it needs to be said, not seriously)

If I'm honest I've often said that I would do it to Blairs numberplate as I think he deserves it more.

Please not anotherrerrrr black plate thread, there’s hundreds on here from over the years.

And although ive read much using search and browsing, I didnt know the asnwer hence the question, you couuuuullllld choose not to participate :-)

You either run them or you don’t? pretty simple.

As much use this thread as the ‘what oil’ thread that happens without searching..

Thanks for your input, is there anywhere where it says a thread has to appeal to everyone or be useful? Maybe encouraging forum participation wouldnt be a bad thing?

That's true, but they still need to be checked to make sure that the details match the car. Computers aren't very good at doing that  ;D

So my van wouldn’t get flagged up as the anpr wouldn’t be triggered. Not that I’ll be experimenting.

My black plates get picked up by the Dartford crossing cameras, but I have an Alfa Spider with a small front white plate that does not get picked up by the Dartford cameras.

Can a Q plate be on black and silver plates?

As i understand it, the black/silver plates are purely based on vehicle age, as long as down on V5C as being registered before 31.12.1979 then it can have them, after that date, it cannot

Whether you are legal to use Black/Silver plates for cars constructed after 1st Jan 1973 seems to be a bit confusing as various websites give conflicting advice, the statement below is taken from the MG Car Club:-

Following the change in definition of a historic vehicle for vehicle tax exemption purposes in 2015, an issue was identified in the regulatory requirements for the valid display of a black and silver number plate. This resulted in an unintended consequence where any vehicle over 40 years old and registered in the historic tax class would be permitted to display an old style black and silver number plate. This was despite the law previously requiring all vehicles first registered after 1 January 1973 to only display the yellow and white number plates with black characters.

As this was never the intention, DVLA have sought to rectify this through a legal correction which will shortly be implemented. The change seeks to prevent any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1980 from the ability to display the black and silver number plate despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Those vehicles with a construction date prior to 1 January 1980 will continue to be able to legally display black and silver number plates to avoid any undue costs of replacement.

I believe the conflicting advice on websites is because many websites have not been updated since the error in making the black/silver plates align with the Historic tax rolling date was corrected by the DVLA but could not be then backdated to the original 1973 cut off date.

ie The cut off date for old style black/silver plates is now 1979, any website which says 1973 is out of date information.
