Mystery Spring Washers

Just done the second oil change on my 1098/ remote gearbox and found a complete 1/4"UNF spring washer and a disintegrated similar washer attached to the sump plug magnet.. Immediate thought was oops, need to take the engine out.

Then I started thinking, where did they come from?

I can only think of the 2 nuts/washers holding the bolts through the oil pickup pipe; so where are the nuts? Maybe next oil change.

Can't think of any other source of these washers unless I was careless and dropped 2 of them in when I was assembling the gearbox.

Any thoughts?

Cam thrust triangle plate bolts, oil pump bolts.

Cam thrust triangle plate bolts, oil pump bolts.

Oil pressure is great. Camshaft triangle bolts; camgear is in the way.

I don't think a 1/4" bolt that might have worked loose is going to win in a fight with the cam gear.

In the few boxes I've stripped any "chewings" that don't stick to the sump plug usually gather behind the Speedo drive housing gasket as it's raised up at the bottom creating a very good Sh#t trap 👍

Oil pump, Cam Thrust Plate and Front Engine Plate are about the only places I can think of that have 1/4" screws on them that are internal as well as a Centre Oil Pick Up Pipe, if one was fitted. The Oil Strainer has captive nuts and the bolts that screw in to it normally have a lock tab and no spring washers.

When I fit a Centre Oil Pick-up, I fit the Bolt from under, with the Nut on top, then stake the few threads of the bolt that come out past the nut so even if it does come loose, it can't come right off.

 

I'd suggest pulling your engine out and splitting it off the gearbox to see where they came from, if there's loose nuts or bolts associated with these washers floating around inside, they can do some serious and expensive damage to the gearbox.
