Upper Tower Subframe Mounts. Easiest Way To Remove?

Best Answer Rubbershorts , 18 October 2024 - 05:54 PM

Cracked it. Cheers everyone, the vibration that was spoiling our enjoyment of the car has greatly reduced. I can now see everything in the rear view mirror. It's not modern car smooth but I can now concentrate on the other things that wind me up as the engine mounts and tie bar mounts problem was masking them somewhat. Exhaust is blowing and causing the car to run rough, and I can't seem to locate what is causing the speed wobble. Bits for the stage one conversation have arrived to sort the first issue, and I think a trip to the wheel balancer ( with brand new wheel/ tires that were already balanced) is on the cards. Managed it. Definitely a bit easier the rad side, so glad I started the difficult one first. Hopefully, judging by the state of it, that is the source of my vibration. Just waiting for a couple of bits from Minispares then we'll find out

Well done.

That engine mount looks like the engine is out of position permanently. Are the steadies correct nd installed properly?

Hi Steam. I am wondering how it got into that position. When I took the mount out the bolts were binding against the side of the mount holes and never got to the stage where you could start spinning them out with your fingers. When I put the new one in they would spin in. This leads me to think that the engine is now in the correct position. There are three steadies on the car. From the front, there is one from the bulkhead near the clutch cylinder to the left side of the cylinder head. Bottom left from the side of the gearbox to the front of the subframe. These were on the car when we got it. The remaining one is underneath on the right, and goes from the gearbox housing to the rear of the subframe. As this last one had rubber mounts, it's the only one reconnected at the moment, and lined up perfectly with no manipulation at all when reinstalled. I fitted this one but didn't do any drilling as the hole in the subframe was already there. My point being I haven't created the distance between the fixings for an out of position engine. I'm awaiting rubber bushes for the other two to replace the poly that were on there so don't know if they no longer line up. If they don't, what would the best course of action be then? Would I force them, or get adjustable ones maybe?

If all you are rplacing is rubber bushes then it will line up as before, you should not need to push or pull the engine by anything but a small amount to line them up.
After that, if the vibrations persist then some serious detective work will be needed to diagnose.

undo your tie bars and start the engine. (I reckon your problem is here, poly bushes are not too good here, you need nice soft supple rubber if you want refinement) Exhaust could be touching too. Edit, just saw that engine mount, looks nasty.

Cheers Pete. Nice soft rubber ones just landed on my desk now. Hopefully get it running later, and hopefully I'll have  big smile on my face. ;D

makes sense, that was why I asked before about the steadies

I replaced the top mount / engine brace fixing on my volvo with a poly bush, and then immediately took it out again literally not half hour later, the NVH was absolutely unbearable, literally the whole dashboard was rattling at idle

Yeah, if the engine was sat squiffy, due to the knackered mount, then presumably extra pressure was put on those steadies that both were set up with poly bushes. It definitely starts to make sense. Until I start it up again tonight and it still vibrates
