Upper Tower Subframe Mounts. Easiest Way To Remove?

Best Answer Rubbershorts , 18 October 2024 - 05:54 PM

Cracked it. Cheers everyone, the vibration that was spoiling our enjoyment of the car has greatly reduced. I can now see everything in the rear view mirror. It's not modern car smooth but I can now concentrate on the other things that wind me up as the engine mounts and tie bar mounts problem was masking them somewhat. Exhaust is blowing and causing the car to run rough, and I can't seem to locate what is causing the speed wobble. Bits for the stage one conversation have arrived to sort the first issue, and I think a trip to the wheel balancer ( with brand new wheel/ tires that were already balanced) is on the cards. Are the engine braces polybushed as well top and bottom?

Poly top and bottom.

Does this vibration match engine revs? or is it only road speed dependent when it's occurring?

It doesn’t sound like the sub-frame mounts.
If the vibration goes with power off and the car in neutral, it has to be related to engine or drive line.
Check engine mounts, steady bars/bushes, exhaust mountings, etc.

It does it anytime the clutch is engaged. This means deceleration also. I can't see the engine mounts but the fitment of the engine feels solid, as in it doesn't move at all.

Have come across some horrible engine mounts that are like the engine is solid mounted, replacing with some decent ones transformed the car.

Its had a new subframe with a previous owner and the upper mounts were changed to poly. Hopefully at the same time they put something solid in for the engine mounts and just changing them will calm everything down. Is it possible to see engine mounts without taking anything out of the car? Radiator etc?

You should be able to see the mounts from under the front or through the grill aperture.  I'd expect an engine or driveline vibration to transmit whether the clutch was in or out, but since you say it only occurs with the clutch in I'm wondering if the problem is some sort of misalignment in the flywheel/pressureplate/clutch plate area.

Oh no, don't say that, it sounds serious🥴 Having a go at the mounts later today so hoping to find something within my limited capabilities there👍

My second suggestion was going to be an out of balance clutch and flywheel. If it has had a new clutch fitted there's a good chance whoever did it didn't get it balanced which is vital, particularly on a verto setup.

If I'm sat in the car revving it, it is so loud and noisy with the vibrations. That is regardless of whether the clutch is engaged or not (so stationary). If outside the car, either reaching in and revving by means of the throttle on the carb, or if the car is driven past you, it sounds sweet. Flying downhill the car vibrates like hell in gear. Knock it out of gear and it's a smooth magic carpet ride. Does this reveal anything?

Cheers Steve, I'll look out for anything catching/touching when I lower it back down. Currently at the stage of mounts are free of subframe, but struggling to get to the back bolt attaching the mounts to the engine. The wife's just called me in and made my favourite tea to calm me down🤣

Christ, that was terrible. Still not finished but I've got the clutch side off and the new one back on. Got the subframe fixing bolts back in and left loose. How frustrating is trying to get that back bolt in? 😱 No matter which way I lifted the engine, or what angle I went at it, it wouldn't happen. At one point, if the car had been drivable, I'd have driven up to the moors and burnt it out for the insurance 🤣 Anyway, tomorrow it's the radiator side and there seems to be a lot more space that side. The mount I got off does look past it, but Im not totally confident that this will solve the issue. We'll find out anyway. Maybe the other one remaining is really bad? Pictures of the mounts, and the spanner and bolt hack that finally allowed me to pop that bxxxxxd bolt back in🤣

Hi Steve, the engine has been up and down many times tonight and it never snagged on anything that would help me out as to where it would be touching. I'll give it a good look over when all fastened back together. What areas are prone to touching that would cause a problem?

Managed it. Definitely a bit easier the rad side, so glad I started the difficult one first. Hopefully, judging by the state of it, that is the source of my vibration. Just waiting for a couple of bits from Minispares then we'll find out 🤞
