Upper Tower Subframe Mounts. Easiest Way To Remove?

Best Answer Rubbershorts , 18 October 2024 - 05:54 PM

Cracked it. Cheers everyone, the vibration that was spoiling our enjoyment of the car has greatly reduced. I can now see everything in the rear view mirror. It's not modern car smooth but I can now concentrate on the other things that wind me up as the engine mounts and tie bar mounts problem was masking them somewhat. Exhaust is blowing and causing the car to run rough, and I can't seem to locate what is causing the speed wobble. Bits for the stage one conversation have arrived to sort the first issue, and I think a trip to the wheel balancer ( with brand new wheel/ tires that were already balanced) is on the cards. It seems unlikely that the vibrations are due to the sub-frame mountings. Early cars had solid mounts and they didn't vibrate like that.

In fact, the superb steering response of the early cars was degraded on post-'76 cars when the rubber mounts degraded.

I have solid mounts on my 1964 car and have fitted solid ones on my 1990 Cooper. Never would I go back to rubber mounts, nor those horrible poly ones.

As above, you only need to drop the back of the sub-frame by about 3/8" to remove the top mounts and fit new ones.

Nick is right that your rubber cone springs look to be past their 'best by' date.

Hi Cooperman, thanks for the input. Regarding the cones. These were replaced all round the car about 500 miles ago (4 months ago). Genuine ones from Minispares. Not sure what use the picture is but posted one anyway. Would it be known for a rubber cone to go 'flat' in such a short space of time. Does anyone have a picture of what they should look like from a similar angle?

Just wondering about the "Rubbershorts" nomenclature.  Are you also a yachtsman ?

I assumed it was because he was the model for Tenaman. Not that I need them. :D  :D

I was sceptical of this job and thought it be a right pain but omg how simple it was. Replaced all mounts for new and it really does feel tight at the front.

Good to hear. Just out of interest, which mounts did you go for?

I don't think so but I believe there is something similar to Tenalady for men but cannot remember what it is called.

If anyone is thinking of developing a similar product, and wishes to use the 'Rubbershorts' name for branding, DM me ;D

My replacement upper subframe mounts arrived today. Christ, they're sort aren't they? I wasn't expecting the rubber to be so compliant. So as someone has pointed out, I fully expect the handling to be a bit shonky. Gonna put them in anyway to see the effect on the vibrations we're experiencing, and if they do nothing to dampen it I'll swop them back. Wife had pins and needles in her feet the last time we went out, it was that bad.

Rubber mounts. Was thinking for solid but heard it causes cracking and a more hard ride. Replaced new rubbers all round and has transformed the car

So I replaced the two upper subframe mounts from yellow poly to the standard rubber and the effect on reducing the vibration was nil. There a little less road noise, but not much. The car still vibrates like a b*****d. The rear view mirror is fairly solidly fixed in place but is semi pointless as it vibrates so much. If, when flying down hill, I knock the car out of gear, it soars silently like a bird of pray and you can see out of the mirror. Stick it back in gear, normal service resumes. When I get around to it I'll replace the rubber for something else but has anyone any ideas on the engine vibration?

Hi Steve. Nothing touching that I can see. All tie bar mounts are new, not sure about the engine mounts as I can't see them. I've bought new to replace if they're jiggered but looks a tricky job. The tie bar bushes are poly, would it be worth changing those to rubber?

If you're certain that nothings touching, I'd be looking at the engine mounts. I've got poly bushes in the upper engine steady, they don't cause any vibration.

Are the engine braces polybushed as well top and bottom?
