Hi All,

 

I've got a 1991 City E, 998 that I'm looking to install a stage 2 kit on for a bit more punch.

 

I'd be happy to do the install myself as a mechanical technician by trade, however I've not got any experience when it comes to engine tuning. 

 

There seems to be a wealth of information out there about this subject but it does seem like a bit of a minefield. Last thing I want to do is install this kit and then bugger the engine because its not set up correctly. 

 

I've got every intention of taking it to a specialist tuners near me once installed, but in order to try and save a bit of cash I will be doing the install myself, however is there a sort of baseline/ safe way to set the car up that's going to allow me to get it there in one piece? 

 

I understand that this might be a wildly vague question, and one to which the obvious answer would be to get a local specialist to do the whole job but like I said, just trying to stretch the pennies as far as possible!

 

Any advice/experience would be much appreciated!

After fitting the supplied needle. All you can do is adjust the height of the jet to set the idle mixture. That’s it. Timing should not need adjusting if it was good before.

KInd of off topic I know but the single best performance mod for a City E is to change the final drive ratio from 2.95 to 3.44 if you want the best bang for bucks.

 

I did it by accident many years ago when I picked up a City E with a duff second gear and it was easier to pluck a spare Metro gearbox off the shelf, wow what a difference an appropriate final drive ratio makes.

 

 A 998 with that high ratio is never going to feel particularly perky but if you do a lot of dual carriageways I can see the benefit but would still go for a 3.2 or 3.1

 

What are we calling a stage 2 these days, cylinder head as well ?
