On  my 1972 minivan the door check straps are fabric and not metal. They have various metal plates used to attach them to the door and inside the door frame.

Please can anyone send me a link to a clear diagram showing how these straps are connected. The online diagrams I have found so far are not very clear.

The 2 black metal plates at the top in the image above hold the door rubber seal strip in place, screwed to the door pillar/inner wheel arch along with that end of the door check strap.

The 2 silver metal plates go inside the door pocket to add strength and spread the load. ie. under the nuts/washers

The 4 black metal plates go on top of each end of the 2 leather/fabric straps before the screws are passed through the straps. (Some leather straps and end plates are colour coded to match the interior car trim).

All fixed in place using the 4-off screws, washers and nuts for the door pocket ends of the straps.

At the door pillar/inner wheel arch end of the check straps, the other 4-off screws go directly into the threaded holes in the body so don't need any nuts or washers.

Thanks so much for this - brilliant!  My van has been under a lengthy restoration and remembering which bits go where can be tricky.

I needed new straps for my mk1 and the colour was not available so I bought a leather belt and cut my own straps.
