I've asked a few other questions on the technical chat, most of which are linked to the same topic - engine swaps and emissions on high performance road Minis. I'm particular interested in what emissions are put out by 1380cc A-series blocks with race/rally/long duration cams that are running on HIF44s or better, DCOE45 carbs. If you run a vehicle like this and you have it on the road I'd be hugely grateful if you could volunteer your MOT emissions output.
As you could garner from my other posts, this is the part of the set-up I'll be running (or hoping to), along with a few other aspects which may have an influence on the emissions. I have a MED 36/29 gas flowed head (probably what would be classed as stage 2-3), 5" maniflow inlet and large bore maniflow LCB. The cam is Kent 286sp. I ran the same cam in the same 1380 with an HIF44 in the late 90s and was never flagged for emissions but the car was an 89 registered Mini. The new donor car is a Dec '93 SPi Cooper.
I've had concerns about failing emissions testing which would be an enormous shame after the outlay of the restoration of the shell and engine. These have been somewhat eased given the online info I've found from the vehicle inspectorate and MOT guidelines. It looks like my build, with an older engine may fall into the easiest category for emissions for a post 1975 car. These being 3.5% CO and 1,200ppm HC. If however the MOT tester holds me to the emissions related to an SPi Mini, these fall to 0.75% CO at normal idle and 0.3% CO and 200ppm HC at fast idle. Somewhat different from the 3.5/1200 bracket.
I may still have to prove the age of the non-original engine being transplanted-in but if folk with similar builds could share their data it may really put my mind at ease (providing of course it's favourable data). I guess the running state of the engine matters so please indicate if you have any obvious running problems.
