Hello

My car popped out of 4th gear with no odd noises of histrionics driving to work.

Coasted to a parking space and now have no drive in any gear.

The gear stick doesn't feel sloppy.

It had previously jumped out of 2nd gear a couple of times.

Ideas on what this might be appreciated.

I've only owned the car since March so am a newbie ti minis

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that your Mini is giving you grief in this way.

The loss of drive could be from a number of reasons;-

Broken Driveshaft (and I hope for you this is what it is),

Busted Diff,
Pinion Nut in the gearbox has come undone, or

Clutch Plate has gone.

Start it, put it in 4th gear, then check if the Speedo is working, if that is, look at the drive shafts (you can usually see them looking down the back of the engine from the top, and see if one is turning, the driver's side is the more common one to break. If you see one turning, that'll be the broken one. If you don't, then it's likely going to be an engine out repair.

I'll also add here that you want to check why your gearbox is jumping out of gear. If it does it a few times, it rounds off the dogs on the gears and then it will never hold gear. It is also an expensive repair. It maybe just from the shifter itself, check if there's a boot on the shifting rod where it enters the gearbox, if there is remove it as that will stop it fully engaging gear.

Right, just tried putting it in 4th gear and the bloody thing moved!

Just been round the yard at work in it and all gears work now.

It got towed up to my work today by the AA after showing them it had no drive.

Consider me baffled.

Could be a sheared roll pin on the gear shaft or more likely not a roll pin but whatever got used for one.

I lost first and third at a busy roundabout down to a sheared 4mm nut and bolt that had been used as a roll pin by the previous keeper, it was chewed up just enough to work occasionally so when it failed so the gear stick wasn`t floppy.

Worth a look and a nice cheap fix.

Hopefully it`s not your flywheel that had come loose as that would lose drive in all gears and then fiction welded itself back on again, returning your drive until the next time.

I had a mini with a recently fitted clutch that I thought was a bit too easy to break traction and wheel spin and on the 4 mile drive home it revved up a couple of times, then I lost drive literally on my driveway and the engine didn`t sound it`s normal self but was still running and then with a rattle and a thud the flywheel dropped off which of course stalled the engine.

Oh and a customers car in the 90`s stripped all the splines off a drive flange but it managed to limp to the garage due to fiction welding itself together briefly so that`s another place to check before stripping down.

A really good effort for a standard 998 City E with thin drive shafts !

The fact that it has jumped out of two different gears at different times would make me think internal gearbox problem . Possibly main bearings. With the engine running is there noticeable less noise when you press the clutch.

Next time it does it, check if the speedo is still working, that'll help narrow it down.
