Hi. I have a 1990 Mini 1000 Checkmate. The oil level is rising and smells of petrol. I have replaced the lift pump to no effect. Any suggestions please?

Take the damper off the carb and see if fuel is leaking from the jet due to float problems.Steve..

Not an authority by any stretch of the imagination, but from reading several related threads on this problem recently, I'd say the take home is don't drive it at all until it's remedied. Is that right folks?

This - if the fuel pump is good and not leaking through the diaphragm the only possibility is the float valve in the carb is leaking.  I do recall parking a mini facing down a steep hill with a full tank and finding the next morning that a mixture of petrol and oil was running down the gutter having escaped from the dipstick hole.
