I managed to get a pair of NOS Metro door pockets and now I need to get the cables into the doors. In my 1993 Sprite there is a square grommet just above the lower door hinge mount in the footwell (see pic). Presumably I can remove it and drill through the other side of the panel to get the cable out of the passenger compartment. But how do I get it into the door? There are no grommets or obvious areas where the cable should go. I've got a right angle drill adapter but I think it's too tight to get it between the door and the frame. Hopefully I don't have to remove the door. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I am sure you can just fix a bit of tubing from the body to the door to run the cable as along as it is flexible and long enough to fully open the door and doesn't catch with the door opening.  Won't look as good as a proper door rubber but your choice - removing the door is quite easy and I have done by myself but easier with 2 people.

Clearly fitting a door rubber would be better and a hidden solution - plus you can run wires for other features.  I have electric windows, central locking and LED welcome lights etc.

That's exactly what I'm planning to do. I just need to know if there's a specific place I need to drill, and if it's possible without removing the door. Maybe I can use the right-angle drill attachment from inside the door (I didn't remove the door cards yet).

I think I did it with the doors attached. That grommet was likely just for  cavity waxing, I ran cables near the check strap, where access is better on the body. It was so long ago I can't remember drilling, which makes me think it was fairly easy, possibly from inside the door with the winder removed. I made two aligned holes for smooth round sleeving, A grommet in each hole, but some careful enlarging on the door side so the sleeve slid in to the door when closed.

Yes, I think the grommet is indeed for rust prevention. I just thought that if I drilled through there, then there's only one steel skin to drill instead of two, or am I missing something?

You could do that, but how does it relate to the hinge? You'll also have to route the cables up the wheel arch, could be easier if they're above the parcel shelf.

Not sure where the grommet is in relation to the hinge, I'll need to check that. I don't understand what you mean about routing the cable up the wheel arch - it should go straight through the panel into the door from what I can see. The parcel shelf already has speakers, it's the door speakers I want to add.

You could also get away with something like this...

Should be able to attach to somewhere on the door where the speakers go and the footwell.  Should protect the cable and look better than loose wires.

Thanks, but looking at the door and frame, I doubt there's enough room for much more than the cable itself. I can always use some shrinkwrap or other tubing to tidy it up. My main problem is where to drill the door and frame.

Do you need to drill the door - is the speaker not in the pocket?  In which case you could just run through the underside of the pocket - I would want to hide as much as possible.

The speakers are in the door pockets but running cables outside of the doors would look rubbish.
