I've got an oil leak I know about.. so when my oil warning light came on and I was getting less than 25 psi on the guage.. at idle of around 900-1000 rpm .. I wasn't surprised. I checked dipstick and yes it was just a tad below minimum.

Got some 20/50 oil to top up and put in about 750 ml....

which in hindsight was too much .. as I went out on a test and checked it... and it was about 5mm above mac on dipstick. all smmeded fine , until i went out on a 20 mile journey . Since then i've had problem with  low oil pressure when warm , at revs below 1500 !!!.

Could my overfilling have forced by relief valve open and jammed it?

Only done 4750 miles since rebuild

id draint he oil out of it and see if there is any metal in it, or take the filter off and cut it open to see.

25 PSI at idle is fine. The norm is around 15 PSI.

The original switches were set at 7 PSI.

Oil level just below minimum won't cause low oil pressure at idle.
If you have actually got low oil pressure it might be that the oil pressure relief valve has got stuck open due to debris, but it won't have anything to do with slightly overfilling the oil.

Pretty much! Worth checking for evidence of it sticking open. I'd replace the oil pressure switch too, as it may not be reading correctly.

What was your oil pressure at hot idle prior to this issue?

Overfilling by such a small amount won't cause any problems.
As above, it's most likely some 'DGS' on the relief valve. Just take the plunger out, clean and polish it, and all should be fine.

ok now have carbs set up by a professional ! Overfueling sorted. He also loosened the cap to the pressure relief valve for me as he had a much longer spanner. !

Will change oil later and see whats floating around in it

Sorry.

Sure wish I knew what the hell that pic is!

"weird , could'nt find any ball or valve cup ...."

Sorry again, guessing that you've been looking under the big Relief Valve nut.

//

About the oil pressure, I haven't read anything about a problem, just     wild guessing for no apparent reason/s except a warning light switch that comes on too high.

"Could my overfilling have forced by relief valve open and jammed it?"

NO!

Assuming the gauge is somewhat accurate, it should at least be consistent and that's what really counts.

What PSI at idle cold, 3000rpm cold, idle hott, and 3000rpm hot??

15 idle hot & 45 3000 hot is fine, just not wonderful for a supposed professional rebuild, and if it wasn't for that trash I'd sleep soundly.

Good Luck.

Sorry if this is a double post   -   not brass but could the detritus be from a dipstick tube ?

there were flakes of bronze as well..caught amongst shavings of steel attached to sump plug magnet.

Is the tube made of bronze like metal ?

Or could it be from a washer or something in gear box
