Howdy Folks,

I finally got my feet wet in the mini world and became the proud owner of an '89 Mini not too long ago, I got the supplies for an oil change along with a replacement oil drain plug, but when I removed the plug I found it to be considerably larger than the replacement I purchased. Are there some mini's that come with larger plugs? The car was originally imported to the states from Germany if that makes a difference. Below I will include a link to an image of the two different plugs.

The replacement is from steveston motor co.

Thank you in advance for any input.

Respectfully,

Jesus

Congratulations !

And welcome to the forum.

All Minis since 1959 had the same size Sump Plug. It is however somewhat common for ham fisted mechanics to strip the thread in the sump, it's only alloy and then fit all manner of things in there.

There's several in cars fixes that can be done - Helicoil is a common one, but I've always found these leave a drip and seldom last a long while. Another fix is to fit an insert.

You could do a search on the forum " Sump Plug " and " Sump Plug Repair " , you'll find a few.

Looks like an M18 or M20 bolt or some sort of UNC alternative (quite a coarse thread)  - with a bit of googling you might find something from a different car to fit (if you want the magnetic plug) or just use the bolt again assuming it seals OK

If it sealed OK, I’d potentially get it made to a sensible, shorter length, a magnet added into the end and then carry on.

Or find out what that thread size is and get a plug from here to match:
