My car is a 1983 Mayfair, I've only owned it about 2 weeks.

The indicators stopped working soon after I bought the car, but the hazards still work.  I assumed the issue was with the indicator stalk so I replaced that, however the issue persists.  Is this a common issue or am I going to have to start digging into wiring?

It can often be a problem with the hazard switch, as the indicators are connected through this. Worth replacing as a first port of call.

Get your friendly Haynes manual out, the indicator circuit is fairly simple.

I would tackle it in this order

  1. Check fuses, take them out, clean connectors, put them back.  What else on that fuse works?
does the interior light come on?   Same circuit as hazard
  2. Check the flasher unit, you can swap with the hazard flasher.  It will be behind the dials (I have a clubman)
  3. Check the power through the hazard switch as suggested. You can’t strip the switch down, clean  fairly simply.  (My indicators stopped due to the plug coming off the back of the switch

As above hazard switch. Try spraying some contact cleaner in it and working the switch on and off about 50 times, that fixed mine.

The hazards and the indicators use separate relays, so the indicator one could be an issue. I would start by removing and cleaning the hazard switch and see if you get any joy that way. They do come apart with care and you can clean the contacts.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've disassembled and cleaned the contacts of the hazard switch as best as I can.  I've ordered a new switch and an indicator relay, so I'll work my way through them when they arrive.

The dash was converted by a previous owner to the mk1 centre dials, so I presume the indicator relay will be behind the clocks.

If you remove the hazard switch you'll see the pins are arranged in a pair & a group of 4. The pair are connected to each other when the hazards are off to supply the  indicator stalk.

When the hazards are on they're isolated, and the other 4 are all connected - supply from hazard flasher, left indicators, right indicators, supply to the warning light in the switch itself.

Bridge the pair (bent paperclip or  fit the switch upside down & on), if the indicators still don't work (ignition on) suspect the flasher unit or fuse.

@carpetwire - any updates as just saw this thread and planning to sort mine out today but interested if a quick solution u found. With mine the indicators did work on one side, then stopped all together - I did all the usual checks and possibly indicator stick which is what I will check next but note I bought new a few years ago??

One unique thing, I have a Canadian model which has the side lights on rear quarter panels and I noticed when indicator did work they were flashing - never happened before and suspect I wired up a miracle as I like it - this may be the root cause - keep me/us posted on your progress m8

The marker lights flashing sounds like an earth fault on the cluster. The electricity is finding a path to earth through the marker light lamp.It is possible to deliberately wire the lights to do this though they then flash with their on/off being opposite.Millions of US cars had front marker lights so wired.Steve..
