Headlights Not Working 1994 Rover Mini

Best Answer Ethel , 29 July 2024 - 08:20 PM

So you've lost dip & main beam on both sides?

Do the tail & sidelights still work, with the headlights turned on?

Do the headlight flasher & horn work?

All the front lights went out.   I've changed the headlight switch, the turn signal/flasher switch, wiper switch.  I've also cleaned all the front light ground wire terminals and replaced the connecting blocks.  The rear lights are working fine.  I've checked the 4 fuse block on the firewall.

I'm open to any suggestions.

If you follow the loom from the headlights back you will come across some bullet type connectors which can corrode. More likely there is a big pink relay just below the Speedo behind the dash that can fail.

On my 1990 Cooper I had the same issue, and the culprit was the fusebox. However you could only see the issue from the rear of the fusebox, by unscrewing it from the bulkhead. All the metal connectors had rusted so I replaced the fusebox with a new one and it rectified the issue.

I replaced the fuse block a couple years ago.  All fuses are in good shape.

But,  Thanks for the input.

Have a look up behind the dashboard binnacle, there may be 4 in line fuses for dip beam and main beam (there is on my 1993 sprite carb car) my car has the 4 fuse box on the bulkhead.

You might have a look at the multiplug that serves the light switch
They can fail due to high current if you have no relays in place, but I would still check those earths. Try bridging across the earth bullet connector to the body.
Good luck

The only place high 'n low, L&R share the circuit is the output from rocker switch to input to the stalk (blue wire). The headlight flasher uses a different supply, so it works without the lights on. If it works it makes rocker switch to stalk more likely.

I don't have any front lights or front sidelights.  Rear lights work ok.  Headlight flasher don't work.  haven't tried horn.

You have possibly lost the earth behind the grille(or wherever the lights all earth to on your car)or the earth point on the bulkhead triangle on the sitting in the car.Get a tester and stop guessing.Steve..

With all that out I'd suspect the earth. That's the black wires screwed to the body.

That would be quite a combination of blown fuses, there's 4 - one for each filament. It also wouldn't explain the sidelights as they're on the same fuse as the tail lights.

I always try to do the free checks first (unless diagnosed as a paying fix) , even to back probe and test for voltage at the fuses.

Checked the 4 fuses.  They're all good.
