Any ideas about what I can do about my steering wheel going sticky.  I think the plastic might be degrading.  It's a standard late '70s two spoke that most of the Minis had.  I had one do this on an old Land Rover to the extent that it would leave a black residue all over my hands.  Can this problem be fixed or has the wheel had it?

About ten years ago, I bought a cheap mock-leather lace-up cover for £10-00

 

I'd buy a padded real leather next time.

I had this happen in the control knobs of a radio and watched a video on youtube where someone rubbed baking powder on the sticky plastic to cure it. I tried it and it worked and the knobs are still smooth and not sticky. I am not sure if it would work on a steering wheel though. I have a MKII Mini and the wheel is sticky on that and has a cover on it which I have left for the moment. If originality was important you can get them repaired by specialists

There use to be a company that advertised in the back of Practical Classics magazine and I have seen episodes of Wheeler Dealers where they have had plastic steering wheels repaired.

try baby wipes may just be a build up of crud rather than the plastic degrading. god knows what they have in them but clean most things.
